Security DVR buying tips...

There's a huge range of security DVR's available today and it's easy to get overwhelmed by makes & models. Here are some helpful tips to remember before you make your buying decision:
  • Make sure the unit you evaluate meets your needs in terms of frame rate, storage and network function. Any reputable security DVR reseller should be able to quickly determine which model will fit the bill based on some basic application information you provide.
  • Understand the warranty coverage and technical support provided. Warranties on security DVR's vary from 1 to 3 years and usually exclude hard drives after the first year. Ask what happens if there's a hardware problem with your unit...will you have to ship it back and if so, do they offer a replacement service while your unit is in the shop? Also, do they have qualified technical support and what are the hours of availability?
  • Software licensing and upgrades...some manufacturers charge yearly licensing fees for their security DVR software as well as for any software upgrades that become available in the future. There's plenty of competition in the marketplace today and a little shopping around can save you plenty of money by eliminating these fees.
  • If you plan to use your security DVR with your internal or external network, make sure to consult your network administrator if that's not your area of expertise. Even with today's high compression codecs, video transmission still requires plenty of bandwidth and your IT people should be involved in the buying decision to make sure there's no surprises after installation.
As with nearly all things in life, you usually get what you pay for - although it pays to shop around. As with most electronic products, security DVR's are sure to keep decreasing in price - especially as more big name companies get involved in the market.
